What is Mounjaro?

Everything you need to know before you start — what it is, how it works, and what it costs with Top Nutrition Coaching.

What Is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is FDA-approved to improve blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. Many people also lose weight while taking it.

Unlike other weight loss medications that use the active ingredient semaglutide, Mounjaro uses tirzepatide. It works a bit differently and can have a stronger impact on weight loss than semaglutide.

Eli Lilly, the manufacturer, also uses tirzepatide for another medication: Zepbound. It’s the same formula but is FDA-approved for chronic weight management. Chemically speaking, Mounjaro and Zepbound are the same.

How Does Mounjaro Work?

Many weight-loss medications work with GLP-1, a hormone the body naturally makes. It helps regulate your appetite by:

  • Slowing how long food stays in your stomach so you feel physically full.
  • Sending signals to your brain that you’re full and satisfied so you stop eating.
  • Helping your pancreas release insulin when blood sugar rises, lowering levels.

However, GLP-1 doesn’t hang around for very long — which is why we still get hungry a few hours later (and hungrier still if we eat food that digests quickly, like simple carbs).

Tirzepatide acts like GLP-1 but lasts much longer in your body. It also activates a second hormone pathway, GIP. It’s also released by the gut after eating that helps your body regulate its blood sugar levels.

Because tirzepatide works on both these hormones, it can have a stronger effect on hunger, digestion, and appetite. That means you might feel satisfied sooner, stay full for longer, and find yourself thinking about food less.

How Do You Take Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is injected once weekly in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. It comes in a pre-filled, single-dose pen with the prescribed dose ready.

The starting dose is typically 2.5 mg weekly, with an increase of 2.5 mg every four weeks to a maximum dose of 15 mg. You may not need a large dose — it will depend on your doctor’s judgement as well as your body’s response and side effects.

What Are the Common Side Effects of Mounjaro?

Expect to get some digestive side effects, especially when increasing dosages. Here’s what you might notice:

  • Fatigue
  • Upset stomach
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Diarrhea, constipation

If these symptoms don’t go away or get worse, let your provider know. Other side effects that require immediate medical attention include:

  • Persistent stomach pain (and may radiate to the back) with or without vomiting
  • Swelling of the face, throat, or around the mouth or eyes
  • Hives; rash; itching; trouble swallowing or breathing
  • Dizziness or a rapid heartbeat
  • Increased risk of thyroid tumors, including thyroid cancer

Getting a Mounjaro Prescription Online - Everything You Need to Know

Can You Get Mounjaro Prescribed Online?

Yes, and you can do it from home. Top Nutrition Coaching can connect you with a licensed prescriber, such as a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant, for an online consultation. They'll look at your blood sugar control, A1c results, health history, and any medications you take to decide whether Mounjaro makes sense for you. If your main goal is weight management, they may also talk with you about Zepbound, which has the same active ingredient and is FDA-approved for that use.

Medication is only one part of managing type 2 diabetes. Top Nutrition Coaching also pairs you with a registered dietitian who can help you plan meals that keep your blood sugar steady, eat enough protein while your appetite is lower, and handle digestive side effects as your dose goes up.

One thing to know as you research: brand-name Mounjaro is FDA-approved, but compounded tirzepatide isn't. Compounded versions haven't gone through the same FDA review for safety, effectiveness, or quality.

Can Mounjaro Be Prescribed for Weight Loss?

Yes, some prescribers use Mounjaro off-label when they decide it's appropriate. If weight management is your main goal, your prescriber may also discuss Zepbound, which has the same active ingredient and is FDA-approved for chronic weight management.

However, some doctors prescribe Mounjaro for weight loss “off-label” if it’s the best option (maybe for insurance or availability).

Your insurance company might require a type 2 diabetes diagnosis to approve it, but you’ll have to ask them to find out for sure.

What to Expect During Your Online Consultation & Who Qualifies

Your online appointment should be just as thorough as an in-person consult. To find out if you qualify, your doctor will ask about your:

  • A1C results
  • Height and weight
  • Blood sugar control
  • Current medications & supplements
  • Overall health status
  • Diet and lifestyle habits
  • Weight and medical history

Have your tests handy, so you’re ready to respond with up-to-date information.

How Much Does Mounjaro Cost?

How much you’ll pay depends on whether or not you have insurance coverage or qualify for manufacturer savings programs. Here’s what to look into:

Is Mounjaro Covered by Insurance?

If you have type 2 diabetes, Mounjaro may be covered. If it is, you might need to get prior authorization, which just means your provider sends your insurance company documents showing that you meet their criteria.

If you’re getting the prescription off-label (without a type 2 diabetes diagnosis), it can be harder to get it covered. Some insurance plans exclude weight-management medications, but check with yours to find out for certain.

How Much Does Mounjaro Cost Without Insurance?

If you pay full price out of pocket, check Eli Lilly’s website for the latest price. You might also be able to pay less if you qualify for their savings program.

Check costs before you fill your prescription so you know what to expect.

How Much Weight Can I Lose on Mounjaro?

Everyone loses weight differently. It all depends on your:

  • Dose
  • Sex, age, genetics
  • Starting weight and height
  • Health conditions, stress levels, etc.
  • Medications and supplements
  • Diet and lifestyle habits

In a clinical trial, tirzepatide showed a weight loss of around 15% of body weight after 72 weeks with a 5 mg weekly dose in adults with obesity or overweight (without type 2 diabetes).

The Importance of Registered Dietitian Support When Taking Mounjaro

Eating less and losing weight doesn’t necessarily signify health. Such a big change in eating patterns can lead to nutritional deficiencies, including muscle mass loss without enough protein.

A registered dietitian can work with you to make sure you get all your nutrients, avoiding other side effects (like fatigue from not enough iron or vitamins, for example). They don’t just hand you a diet plan, either. They learn about your habits, lifestyle, and goals to make a practical plan that feels manageable.

It’s important to keep in mind that weight regain is common once you stop taking Mounjaro. For example, a study of stopping tirzepatide after 36 weeks showed a 14% regain another 36 weeks later.

That’s why a dietitian can be a great support system for accountability, helping you develop healthier habits that last long after you stop medication.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy Mounjaro online?

Yes, once you have a prescription. Top Nutrition Coaching can connect you with a licensed prescriber who can decide during an online consultation whether Mounjaro is right for you. If they prescribe it, you can fill it at a local pharmacy, through your insurance's mail-order pharmacy, or online through LillyDirect, Eli Lilly's self-pay pharmacy. Medication costs are billed separately, and coverage depends on your plan.

What is the difference between Mounjaro and tirzepatide?

Mounjaro is the brand name for an FDA-approved type 2 diabetes medication. It uses the active ingredient tirzepatide.

What is the difference between Mounjaro and Ozempic?

Both are FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes, but they contain different medications. Mounjaro uses tirzepatide, which activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Ozempic uses semaglutide, which activates only the GLP-1 receptor.

What is the difference between Mounjaro and Zepbound?

They have the same active ingredient, tirzepatide, but different FDA indications. Mounjaro is meant for type 2 diabetes, while Zepbound is for chronic weight management.

Is tirzepatide (Mounjaro) more effective than semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy)?

Clinical trials tend to show that tirzepatide leads to more weight loss than semaglutide. However, you might respond differently.

What to Expect During Your Online Consultation

Be prepared for a thorough evaluation going over your current and past medical conditions. If possible, have recent lab results and any other relevant health information on hand.

‍

Things you might be asked about:

‍

  • Current weight, height, and body mass index (BMI)
  • Diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, or insulin resistance
  • Other prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, or supplements
  • Chronic or acute pancreatitis, kidney disease, or severe stomach problems
  • Past and current weight management strategies and physical activity levels
  • Individual or family history of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)

‍

If you struggle with emotional eating or appetite issues, let them know. They’ll want to go over past weight loss experiences as well as your current eating patterns to see if Ozempic is a good fit.

Why do I need a registered dietitian (RD) when taking GLP-1s?

These medications cut your appetite so much that you can become deficient in some vitamins and nutrients (like fiber and protein). On top of that, the majority of people gain back weight after stopping the medication. An RD can keep you healthy while taking GLP-1s and set you up with habits that last long after you stop.
