What is Wegovy?

Everything you need to know before you start — what it is, how it works, and what it costs with Top Nutrition Coaching.

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is an FDA-approved medication for weight management. Specifically, it was designed for adults with obesity, or overweight with at least one weight-related health condition (like hypertension or type 2 diabetes).

It was also approved to reduce the risk of serious heart problems (like heart attacks and strokes). It’s not only for adults, either — adolescents 12 and older with obesity may be prescribed Wegovy.

It’s important to keep in mind that it’s meant to be taken while implementing other lifestyle changes, like a reduced-calorie diet and physical activity.

How Does Wegovy Work?

How much and how often we eat is regulated by many things — physical activity, health, stress, age, and, very importantly, hormones.

Several hormones impact your appetite, and one of them is GLP-1. It’s a natural hormone your gut makes whenever you eat, and it tells your brain you’re full. It also slows digestion, keeping food in your stomach for longer (making you feel fuller for longer, too). Your body usually breaks down this hormone in a few minutes, so that you eventually get hungry again after the food leaves your stomach.

Wegovy, however, uses a lab-engineered drug, semaglutide, to mimic more GLP-1. It’s also designed to resist being broken down, staying active in your system for a week (hence the once-weekly injections).

It continuously slows digestion and calms your brain’s craving centers so you don’t feel hungry as often, which leads to eating much less.

How Do You Take Wegovy?

Like most weight management medications, Wegovy is injected weekly in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. It comes as a prefilled, single-dose pen, with dosages increasing as needed over time (also referred to as titration).

  • Weeks 1-4: Starting dose of 0.25 mg once weekly
  • Weeks 5-8: Increase to 0.5 mg once weekly
  • Weeks 9-12: Increase to 1.0 mg once weekly
  • Weeks 13-16: Increase to a potential maintenance dose of 1.7 mg
  • Weeks 17-20:  Increase to a potential maintenance dose of 2.4 mg

Recently, the FDA approved an even higher dose of 7.2 mg, called Wegovy HD. It’s only for certain adults with health conditions.

What Are the Common Side Effects of Wegovy?

Side effects are one of the biggest reasons why people stop taking Wegovy, so it’s important to be aware of what you might experience. This includes:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Stomach pain, constipation
  • Runny nose or sore throat
  • Heartburn, burping
  • Headache

If any of these symptoms feel severe and don’t go away, call your doctor.

More serious side effects that call for emergency medical treatment are:

  • Vision changes
  • Fainting or dizziness
  • Rapid or pounding heartbeat
  • Severe stomach pain or intestinal problems
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes; fever; or clay-colored stools
  • Decreased urination; or swelling of legs, ankles, or feet
  • Rashes, itching, swelling of the eyes, face, mouth, tongue, or throat; or difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Ongoing pain that begins in the upper left or middle of the stomach but may spread to the back, with or without vomiting

Getting a Wegovy Prescription Online - What You Need to Know

Can You Get Wegovy Prescribed Online?

Yes, you can, as long as the service includes a real medical evaluation. Top Nutrition Coaching connects you with a licensed prescriber (this may be a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant). They'll review your health history, current medications, and goals before deciding whether Wegovy is a good fit. That decision belongs entirely to your prescriber, so a prescription isn't guaranteed.

Because the same platform also connects you with a registered dietitian, you don't have to manage medication on your own. Your RD can help you build eating habits that support your treatment and make it easier to keep results going after your first few months.

Be cautious of websites selling "semaglutide" instead of Wegovy. Compounded versions aren't FDA-approved and haven't gone through the same review for safety, effectiveness, or quality. A legitimate service will only prescribe after a proper evaluation by a licensed prescriber.

Wegovy vs. Ozempic — Why Does It Matter Which One You're Prescribed?

While both medications use the same active ingredient (semaglutide), they’re prescribed for different situations.

Wegovy is FDA-approved for chronic weight management for teens or adults with obesity, or adults with at least one health condition and overweight.

Meanwhile, Ozempic is FDA-approved for adults with type 2 diabetes. It’s not approved for general weight loss or teenagers.

Sometimes, doctors will prescribe Ozempic off-label for weight management. However, it doesn't make the medications identical in terms of labeling, dosing, or even insurance coverage.

Which one you’re prescribed is up to your doctor, after they’ve reviewed your health history, diagnosis, treatment goals, and often, insurance options.

Who Qualifies for an Online Wegovy Prescription?

The basic qualifying conditions are:

  • Obesity (BMI of 30+) in adolescents 12+ and adults
  • Overweight (BMI 27+) in adults with one or more weight-related health conditions

Weight-related health conditions can vary and include:

  • High cholesterol
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Obstructive sleep apnea

Meeting these criteria doesn’t always guarantee a prescription. In the end, the decision is up to your doctor after a thorough medical consultation.

What to Expect During Your Online Consultation

Come prepared with your health information. You’ll likely be asked about:

  • Medical conditions
  • Your weight history
  • Relevant lab results
  • Your treatment goals
  • Family medical history
  • Your current height and weight
  • Previous attempts at weight loss
  • Current medications and supplements
  • Eating patterns and lifestyle

If some questions feel embarrassing, they’re worth answering honestly. We all know how difficult managing a healthy weight is, and it’s information your doctor needs to know to get you the best treatment possible.

How Much Does Wegovy Cost?

How much you pay will depend on your dose, pharmacy, and insurance coverage. After getting a prescription, calling your insurance company is a good first step.

Is Wegovy Covered by Insurance?

Meeting the criteria and getting prescribed Wegovy doesn’t always mean you’ll be covered by insurance. It depends on your plan, employer’s benefits, and the reason for the prescription.

Some commercial plans cover Wegovy but require prior authorization (your provider submits proof you meet their criteria). Others may have restrictions or exclude weight-management medications altogether.

Telehealth providers often help with insurance verification and prior authorization paperwork. But in the end, it comes down to your insurance plan.

How Much Does Wegovy Cost Without Insurance?

Without insurance, the formulation, dose, pharmacy, and manufacturer savings programs come into play to determine the cost. Novo Nordisk (the manufacturer) offers savings programs, but you have to meet their criteria.

Savings programs can change, so check out Wegovy’s website for savings options.

How Much Weight Can I Lose on Wegovy?

Weight loss never comes with a clear-cut answer. Some factors that impact how much you lose include: starting weight, height, age, sex, health condition, lifestyle habits, and dosage prescribed.

Clinical trials showed average weight loss of about 15% of body weight over 16 months (when combined with lifestyle changes).

However, after about one year of stopping 2.4 mg of semaglutide and lifestyle counseling, people regain about 67% of the weight they originally lost.

The Importance of Registered Dietitian Support When Taking Wegovy

Weight-loss medications can suppress your appetite enough to make you deficient in important nutrients. That can lead to other side effects that impact your health, including fatigue, difficulty sleeping, and additional muscle mass loss, to name a few.

A registered dietitian (RD) helps make sure you eat well enough to get your needs met. But they don’t do it with just a diet plan PDF.  They talk with you, learn your lifestyle, habits, stress levels, and more. They find out your blocks to what makes eating healthier or moving more hard, and work to find ways around it.

An experienced RD should make your life easier. They don’t overwhelm you and give advice you’ll never follow through on. They work on habit-building to set you up for long-term health. Because once you stop taking the medication, your appetite (and old eating habits) will likely return — unless you work to change them.

Get started by taking the quiz to get matched with someone who will support you every step of the way. Plus, your insurance may even cover RD visits fully, which you can find out on Top Nutrition Coaching before committing to anything.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Wegovy and Ozempic?

They both use semaglutide as the active ingredient, but Wegovy is for weight management, and Ozempic is for type 2 diabetes.

Why do I need a registered dietitian (RD) when taking GLP-1s?

These medications cut your appetite so much that you can become deficient in some vitamins and nutrients (like fiber and protein). On top of that, the majority of people gain back weight after stopping the medication. An RD can keep you healthy while taking GLP-1s and set you up with habits that last long after you stop.

What is the difference between Wegovy and Zepbound?

Both are FDA-approved for weight management, but they use different ingredients. Wegovy has semaglutide, and Zepbound has tirzepatide. They work a bit differently and have different prescriptions.

Is Wegovy available as a pill, or only an injection?

In the U.S., you can now get Wegovy as either a pill or an injection. The pill is taken daily with a different dose-escalation schedule.

‍

What happens if I stop taking Wegovy?

People tend to regain about 67% of the weight they lost one year after stopping Wegovy. This number can change if you also work on changing lifestyle habits (which a registered dietitian, whom you may be covered for, can help with).
