What's Missing From GLP-1 Care Alone?

Internal Medicine Physician

Dr. Devon Allen

"I think of GLP-1 medications as a tool - not the whole treatment plan. The lasting results come from pairing them with nutrition guidance and healthy habits."

Registered Dietitian

Valentina Frank

"A GLP-1's appetite suppression causes weight loss, but you need to build sustainable habits to be able to be successful in the long term. I don't want to give you a bandaid - I want to help you take care of this for the long term."

Registered Dietitian

Michelle Rodgers

"GLP-1 medications work best as part of a comprehensive approach that includes nutrition, physical activity, and behavior change."

How It Works

Here's what to expect before your first appointment.

How Your Dietitian Supports Your GLP-1 Journey

Medication changes how your body responds to food at every stage. Your registered dietitian adjusts your plan to match.

01

Getting Started

Weeks 0 - 6

Manages early GI side effects (nausea, reflux) through meal timing, texture, and portion strategies

Encourages protein intake even as appetite drops sharply — this is the most important opportunity for preventing muscle loss

Builds hydration and micronutrient habits before appetite suppression makes eating feel like a chore

02

Adjusting to Treatment

Weeks 4 - 16

Adjusts strategies as side effects intensify or change (constipation, delayed gastric emptying)

Catches under-eating before it becomes chronic — patients often eat too little simply because they can, not because it's adequate

Coordinates with resistance training guidance to preserve muscle as the calorie deficit deepens

03

Steady Progress Phase

Weeks 16+

Shifts focus to sustainable habits: protein targets (~1.2-1.5g/kg), fiber, strength training — and won't provide inaccurate, dangerous, or unsustainable habits like AI is known to do

Monitors for common nutrient deficiencies (B12, iron, calcium) as intake volume stays low long-term

Addresses your psychological relationship with food — appetite suppression doesn't fix emotional eating patterns, it just mutes hunger cues temporarily and old habits may start to return

Creates new habits to handle diminishing appetite suppression or plateaus as tolerance builds

04

Long-Term Maintenance

Weeks 52+

This is where weight regain happens if there's no behavioral foundation in place

RD rebuilds sustainable eating patterns and manages rebound hunger as the drug's appetite effect fades

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the GLP-1 program include?

If your licensed prescriber determines that medication is right for you, the program includes ongoing virtual sessions with a doctor (MD) or nurse practitioner (NP) for GLP-1 medication management, plus sessions with a registered dietitian (RD) for personalized nutrition support. Medication costs are not included — you'll pay your preferred pharmacy directly for the prescription.

How does the GLP-1 program work?

Your first month starts with a 30-minute consultation with your MD/NP to discuss your health history and goals. If deemed appropriate by the clinician, you'll receive a prescription for a GLP-1. You'll also schedule a 60- or 90-minute introductory session with your RD. Future months include virtual visits with both your prescriber (for medication management and side-effect monitoring) and your dietitian to help keep you on track.

Will my insurance cover this?

Your insurance may provide coverage for our GLP-1 program, depending on the state you live in and your specific health insurance plan benefits. Top Nutrition Coaching partners with experienced licensed prescribers (MDs/NPs) and registered dietitians across the country who accept insurance, including Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, BCBS, Cigna, and Anthem. Many insurance plans offer $0 out-of-pocket costs for in-network virtual visits with doctors, nurse practitioners, and registered dietitians as a medically necessary preventive service for conditions like diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. Coverage will depend upon your individual plan. We always verify your insurance benefits before you see a provider — there are no hidden fees or unexpected charges.

How does the GLP-1 program membership work if fully covered by my insurance?

Visits are billed directly to your insurance, and there's no monthly membership fee paid to Top Nutrition Coaching. We verify your insurance benefits before your first visit, and we will let you know if you will be responsible for out-of-pocket costs (e.g., copays, coinsurance, or deductible). Your first month will include a 30-minute initial visit with your licensed prescriber and a 60–90 minute initial session with your registered dietitian. Both of your providers will continue to meet with you via virtual visits that work with your schedule. Follow-up prescriber visits are typically 20 minutes; registered dietitian visits can be weekly, biweekly, or monthly for 30–60 minutes, based on what your insurance covers.

What if my insurance doesn't cover this?

Top Nutrition Coaching’s network of providers who accept insurance is always expanding. If we do not currently have available providers who accept your insurance plan, you can sign up for a self-pay membership plan. Our self-pay membership costs may qualify as FSA- or HSA-eligible expenses, and we can provide a superbill after each visit that you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement. Many members are reimbursed for 40%-70% of the cost, though this isn't guaranteed and varies by plan. Medication coverage is separate and depends on your insurance carrier.

How much does the self-pay GLP-1 program cost?

Your first month is free. After that, the GLP-1 + RD self-pay bundle membership is $149/month, which covers your monthly licensed prescriber visit for medication management and a registered dietitian session. Medication costs are not included in the membership — your provider will walk you through your specific options and estimated medication costs during your consultation.

What does the monthly self-pay GLP-1 membership include?

For our our GLP-1 + RD self-pay bundle membership, the first month includes an initial 30-minute consultation with a licensed prescriber (MD/NP) and a 60-minute introductory session with your registered dietitian. Each subsequent month includes a 20-minute licensed prescriber follow-up for medication management and side-effect monitoring, plus a 30-minute session with your registered dietitian. You will be able to self-schedule both virtual appointments on a monthly basis.

Does my membership cover medication?

No, medication is a separate cost from the membership. Pricing depends on the medication prescribed, your health history, your insurance plan, your selected pharmacy, and any manufacturer savings programs. Your licensed prescriber will review specific options with you during your initial consultation to help identify appropriate treatment options for you.

What if I need a prior authorization for my medication?

Your licensed prescriber can submit a prior authorization to your insurance on your behalf. Approval timelines vary by carrier, and coverage decisions are ultimately made by your insurer, so approval isn't guaranteed.

What does the registered dietitian help with?

Your registered dietitian supports meal planning and nutrition guidance, protein and hydration strategies, hunger and fullness awareness, behavior-change coaching, and long-term weight maintenance planning. You'll meet with them regularly via virtual visits and can communicate with them between visits through our care portal.

Can I skip the dietitian and only see the licensed GLP-1 prescriber?

Yes. Before checkout, you can choose a prescriber-only program. You'll still get access to ongoing medication management and prescription renewals with a MD/NP, just without the dietitian support.

Can I transfer my care from another GLP-1 provider?

Yes! Bring your most recent lab results and current treatment history to your initial consultation, and your licensed prescriber will continue your care from where you left off. You'll also gain access to monthly registered dietitian sessions, which most GLP-1 programs don't include.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes, with no cancellation fees. If you are part of our self-pay program, any sessions you've already paid for stay available through the end of your current billing cycle, and your monthly credits will simply stop renewing after that. If you are seeing providers that accept your insurance, no formal cancellation is needed; you can choose to stop scheduling future appointments at any time.
