What is Rybelsus?

Everything you need to know before you start — what it is, how it works, and what it costs with Top Nutrition Coaching.

What is Rybelsus?

Like other weight loss medications, Rybelsus was created for type 2 diabetes. It uses semaglutide, just like Ozempic and Wegovy. However, how it’s delivered to your body is different.

‍

It’s meant to help lower your blood sugar, and a side effect can be weight loss. It’s also meant to be taken alongside a healthy diet and exercise habits to work well.

How Does Rybelsus Work?

Rybelsus works with a natural hormone in your body called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). It’s normally released after you eat and lets you know you’re full, but it doesn’t last long — unless you take medication.

Semaglutide mimics GLP-1 and lasts longer, leading to:

  • Slower Digestion: It delays how quickly your stomach empties food. This keeps you feeling full much longer after eating.
  • Sending “Full” signals to the Brain: It targets the areas of your brain that regulate appetite, lowering hunger signals and cravings.
  • Blood Sugar Regulation: It tells your pancreas to release insulin when your blood sugar is high, while also preventing your liver from making too much sugar.

Because it’s a pill rather than an injection, it also uses a special absorption enhancer (SNAC) to help the medicine survive your stomach acid and get absorbed directly into your bloodstream.

How Do You Take Rybelsus?

Rybelsus is taken daily under specific conditions:

  • On an empty stomach
  • First thing in the morning
  • With no more than 4 ounces of plain water
  • 30-minute minimum wait before eating, drinking, or taking other oral medications

You also can’t crush, split, chew, or dissolve the tablet, and the directions have to be followed fully to get the full dose of the medication.

You’ll also start at a lower dose and gradually increase it, giving your body time to adapt.

  • Starting Dose: 3 mg once daily for 30 days
  • Maintenance Dose: Increase to 7 mg
  • Maximum Dose: Increase to 14 mg after 30 days on 7 mg, if needed

If you miss a dose, you’ll have to skip it and take your next dose the following day.

The new routine can take a little planning, especially if you’re used to waking up and grabbing a coffee, breakfast, or other morning medications. A registered dietitian can help you build a new evening and morning routine so that the waiting period doesn't mess with your nutrition (and morning grogginess).

What Are the Common Side Effects of Rybelsus?

Like all medications, there are side effects and risks to think about. The most common side effects with GLP-1 medications are:

  • Fatigue
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Diarrhea, constipation

These symptoms flare up when you first start or increase your dose — but let your doctor know if they don’t go away or get worse. More serious side effects that call for immediate medical attention are:

  • Vision changes
  • Severe stomach or intestinal problems
  • Decreased urination; swelling of legs, ankles, or feet
  • Pain that begins in the stomach but may spread to the back, with or without vomiting
  • Rash; itching; eyes, face, mouth, tongue, or throat swelling; difficulty breathing or swallowing

Getting a Rybelsus Prescription Online - What You Need to Know

If you’re someone who hates needles but wants a GLP-1 weight loss medication, you might be interested in Rybelsus.

You’re not alone. Dr. Devon Allen, physician and medical contributor at Top Nutrition Coaching, counts it among the factors that guide which medication a patient starts: “Pill form versus injectable is another factor for some patients who may be reluctant to use injectables.”

It helps with weight loss, although that isn’t its main function, and has become world-famous as the first semaglutide pill on the market.

Other formulations (like Ozempic) are once weekly injections, which isn’t for everyone. However, just because there’s a “weight loss pill” doesn’t mean it’s right for you. Read on to learn how it works, who it’s for, and if an online prescription is possible for you.

Can You Get Rybelsus Prescribed Online?

Yes, you can get Rybelsus prescribed online — there are just a few things to watch out for:

  • Use a legitimate telehealth provider
  • Check that the doctors are licensed
  • Get a full medication consultation covering all your info (diagnoses, medications, etc.)

If you’re on a website offering semaglutide without a medication evaluation, you may not be getting what you’re paying for.

Can Rybelsus be Prescribed for Weight Loss?

You can get Rybelsus prescribed for weight loss — but only “off label.” This means that your doctor has decided to offer a medication not for its FDA-approved status (which is type 2 diabetes).

Meanwhile, Wegovy uses the same active ingredient (semaglutide) but is FDA-approved for chronic weight management. It comes as both a once-weekly injection and a once-daily pill, each with its own dosing schedule and insurance criteria.

If you don’t have type 2 diabetes but want semaglutide for weight management, Wegovy is the FDA-approved option. And if you’d rather avoid needles, the Wegovy pill offers the same daily-tablet format as Rybelsus.

Who Qualifies for an Online Rybelsus Prescription?

If you have type 2 diabetes and need help with your blood sugar, you might qualify for Rybelsus. However, the decision is up to your doctor in the end. Your medical history, goals, and other conditions have a big impact on which medication is right for you.

What to Expect During Your Online Consultation

Make sure your provider offers full medical consultations. The doctor you meet should ask you about:

  • Your lifestyle and goals
  • Other medical conditions
  • Your family medical history
  • Your current height and weight
  • Current medications and supplements
  • Any previous experience with GLP-1 medications
  • Previous diabetes or weight-management treatments
  • Your diabetes history and recent blood sugar or A1c results

Have your current medication list and recent lab results available if you can. Your insurance information might also be helpful if you're hoping to have the prescription covered.

And give your doctor the whole picture. If you've struggled with side effects from another medication, frequently forget morning medications, or have a complicated breakfast routine, those details can actually matter when deciding whether a daily tablet is a good fit.

How Much Does Rybelsus Cost?

You can pay anything from zero to over a thousand dollars. It all depends on your insurance and eligibility for savings programs.

Is Rybelsus Covered by Insurance?

Since Rybelsus is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes, it can be covered if you fit the criteria. Otherwise, you might have a harder time convincing your insurance company it’s needed. Either way, they might also ask you to try other medications first.

Even if you get a prescription, call your insurance company before getting it filled at the pharmacy to get an idea of the cost.

How Much Does Rybelsus Cost Without Insurance?

Costs are always changing, so check the manufacturer's website for the current price. You might also qualify for their savings program. Otherwise, the full price can be around $1,000 USD (or more) per month.

How Much Weight Can I Lose on Rybelsus?

Weight loss is different for everyone. Some of the biggest factors that affect how much you lose are:

  • Starting height and weight
  • Age, sex, genetics
  • Lifestyle habits (diet, exercise)
  • Health condition and medications
  • Dosage amount, consistency, and treatment duration

On average, people lose around 6% of body weight after one year of treatment. However, that doesn’t mean the weight stays off. Stopping the medication means appetite returns to normal.

The Importance of Registered Dietitian Support When Taking Rybelsus

While on the medication, you may eat less, which means you get fewer nutrients. If that leads to a deficiency, you might develop symptoms like fatigue, headaches, and more.

A registered dietitian (RD) works with you to learn about your habits and finds practical ways for you to get proper nutrition. It’s not a diet plan — it’s a deep dive into your lifestyle, habits and goals.

You get a support system with you every step of the way, making sure you’re developing healthy habits that last. This is especially important since when you stop the medication and your appetite returns, so does weight gain.

With the help of an RD, you can create a healthier lifestyle that sets you up with tools for weight management, even without medication.

The best part? An RD might be covered by your insurance. Check your insurance coverage with Top Nutrition Coaching and get started on your weight loss journey today.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Rybelsus be crushed, split, or taken with food?

Rybelsus has to be swallowed whole with plain water on an empty stomach. Other drinks, food, or oral meds have to wait to be taken for at least 30 minutes.

What happens if I eat or drink too soon after taking Rybelsus?

If you eat or drink too soon, the medication may not be absorbed, leading to a smaller amount of semaglutide reaching your system.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Rybelsus?

If you miss a dose, skip it and take your next dose the following day as usual. Don't take two doses on the same day to make up for the missed tablet.

What's the difference between Rybelsus and Ozempic?

Both are FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes, use semaglutide, and work with the GLP1-1 hormone. The difference is that Rybelsus is a daily tablet, while Ozempic is a weekly injection.

What is the difference between Rybelsus and Wegovy?

Both use semaglutide, but Rybelsus is a tablet FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is a once-weekly injection FDA-approved for chronic weight management.

What is the difference between Rybelsus and Mounjaro?

Rybelsus is a daily tablet with semaglutide, which acts on the GLP-1 hormone. Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection with tirzepatide, acting on two hormones (GLP-1 and GIP).
