Benefits of working with a sports nutritionist vs. going it alone

Most people find it frustrating and ineffective to try to improve their nutrition for better sports performance on their own. Hiring an expert offers many advantages.

Customized support

An image of an arrow icon
What does it mean to maintain a healthy diet? The answer is different for everyone. Your nutrition plan should factor in your unique health issues, physical attributes, and goals. A nutrition plan to support athletic performance and muscle recovery is different from a plan to facilitate weight loss. We have a network of nutrition experts who specialize in helping athletes improve their performance and minimize the risk of injury. You'll get a nutrition and lifestyle plan tailored to your unique needs and performance goals.

Reliable information

An image of an arrow icon
A quick internet search for "sports nutrition" can give you access to countless articles, blogs, podcasts, and books from so-called experts. However, it can be tough to determine whether those resources are accurate and reliable. Finding trustworthy information on the internet is always a challenge, especially with hot-button topics like nutrition. We only invite experts with a track record of success to join our network of nutrition counselors. In fact, we only accept the top 2.5% of applicants. With our service, you can be sure you're getting reliable advice from a highly qualified nutritionist with excellent credentials.

Better recovery

An image of an arrow icon
There are several factors to consider when fueling your body to improve your athletic performance. Your diet should include the resources you need to run faster, lift more, and play better on the field. But fueling up isn't the only important part of your diet. You also need to make sure you're giving your body the nutrients required to recover after each workout by repairing muscles, reducing soreness, and staying hydrated. Your nutritionist will build a plan that supports your body throughout workouts and recovery.

An image of an arrow icon

However, with Top Nutrition Coaching, you can feel confident that you are working with a highly qualified expert in nutrition and food studies. All of the nutritionists in our network are registered dietitians who have completed higher education and work experience requirements. They have all taken the required registration exams and many have additional credentials, such as a Certification in Sports Dietetics. Experience

An image of an arrow icon
Most of the nutritionists in our network have many years of experience working with athletes to improve their health and achieve optimal performance. Some of our nutritionists have been working for decades. Not every nutrition service, especially those online, offers professionals with this level of expertise. At Top Nutrition Coaching, we don't just hire individuals with a certain amount of time in the field. We require every applicant to prove that their previous clients have improved their performance and wellness. You'll get matched with a nutritionist who has the education and hands-on experience to understand your needs and provide meaningful support to help you reach your goals.

About New York City Registered Dietitians

To be a “Certified Dietitian,” “Certified Nutritionist,” or “Certified Dietitian-Nutritionist” in New York, you must be at least 18 years old and complete the state’s certification requirements.

Education

New York requires at least a bachelor’s degree in an accredited dietetics-nutrition program along with 800 work experience hours under supervision from a NY-State-Certified Dietitian-Nutritionist. Alternatively, you may have a qualifying associate degree along with at least 10 years of full-time work experience under supervision.

Endorsement and Examination

To become certified, you must be endorsed by 3 certified dietitian-nutritionists. You must also pass either the Registered Dietitian (RD) exam or the Certified Nutrition Specialist exam.

Get Over the New York City Hurdles and Get Back to Health

New York City may be home to countless medical nutrition therapy experts and healthy food choices, but so many options can be overwhelming. Some of the greatest benefits of the city also present challenges, especially when you’re trying to align your eating habits with your sports goals.

Cooking healthy food

Many homes in New York City have compact kitchens with limited space to store and prepare healthy ingredients. Residents often have to shop for just a few meals at a time, which can make it difficult to eat a diverse diet full of nutrient-rich foods.

Often, city residents shop at local bodegas, which don’t have as many options for fresh food and produce as large supermarkets. Even if you have a plan for cooking nutritious meals, the difficulties of finding, storing, and preparing fresh ingredients may make it impossible to stick to that plan.

Accessing minimally processed ingredients

Often, store shelves (especially those in small, local markets) are full of highly-processed foods and ingredients, which are convenient and tasty, but not very nutritious. These commonly found foods may even be addictive, which can make it harder to choose healthier, unprocessed ingredients even when they are easily available.

Overcoming the convenience factor

One of the best parts of living in New York City is access to delicious restaurants and takeout options from every type of cuisine. However, the convenience of eating out or ordering delivery often makes it hard to choose foods that support your dietary goals, such as those with enough protein to facilitate muscle recovery. The temptation of ordering a less-than-healthy meal from a favorite restaurant makes it hard to stick to nutrition goals.

Full Transparency Pros and Cons

Working with a dietitian from our network isn’t the only way to improve your nutrition and sports performance. Other options, including diet companies and online meal plans, each have unique pros and cons that can determine which one is best for your specific needs.

Open Marketplaces

Pros

  • An open marketplace can give you access to hundreds of nutritionists with different educational backgrounds, qualifications, specializations, and rates. It’s usually easy to find someone with availability.
  • It’s easy to study each nutritionist's biography, experience, and credentials, so you can compare them to find the one who matches your budget and needs.

Cons

  • There are so many options that it takes a long time to narrow down your choices to a list of nutritionists that could be right for your performance goals and personal needs.
  • Most open marketplaces don’t regulate their listings or offer any sort of satisfaction guarantee, so there may not be a way to get your money back if the nutritionist you choose isn’t a good fit for you.

Diet Companies

Pros

  • Most weight loss diet companies offer everything from regulated meal plans and recipes to fully prepared and delivered meals. These services remove the work and decision fatigue that often prevent people from changing their diet.
  • Many companies offer a money-back guarantee so you can get a refund if you don’t see the results you are expecting, and some also provide a free trial period.

Cons

  • Most diet companies strictly focus on weight loss through caloric deficit. These plans often don’t provide enough nutrition energy for athletes who want to improve their performance.
  • Recipes and ready-made meals are often designed for a specific type of consumer (e.g. someone who is looking for weight management), and you usually don’t have the option to customize your diet plan.

Online Meal Plans

Pros

  • Online meal planning services can take the stress out of trying to cook healthy meals. You can usually get a weekly plan that includes recipes, shopping lists, and preparation instructions, so you don’t have to do any of that research yourself.
  • Meal planning services are typically much more affordable than other options, including diet plans that ship ready-made meals and one-on-one sessions with a registered dietitian.

Cons

  • It’s hard to customize many online meal plans for different people. You might not be able to find personalized nutrition planning that supports your performance goals and matches your preferences and/or food allergies.
  • Many online meal plans are structured around cooking for either a large family or a single person, so you may have to spend time altering the recipes to accommodate the number of people you are feeding.
