Benefits of Working with a Sports Nutritionist vs. Going It Alone

With all the conflicting information out there, it can be hard to figure out how to modify your diet to improve your performance and recovery. Avoid the confusion by working with an experienced sports nutritionist who will offer nutrition strategies based on your unique body composition, lifestyle, immediate goals, and food preferences.

Measurable improvement

An image of an arrow icon
When you’re trying to manage your nutrition independently, it can be hard to figure out if you’re actually making progress. Did you run faster because of what you ate, or was it just a fluke? Your specialist has the experience to help you understand how your new nutrition program is working and will track your progress at every session. You’ll see results on the field, track, or court and will know precisely what contributed to your success so you can keep moving forward.

Quicker recovery

An image of an arrow icon
When you think about optimal nutrition for better athletic performance, you might focus on giving your body enough fuel for workouts. But it’s just as important to make sure you’re eating foods that will help your body recover between exercise sessions. Factoring in your workout schedule, activity level, and rest days, your sports dietitian will develop a plan that gives your body the necessary nutrients for better performance and recovery.

Long-term success

An image of an arrow icon
At Top Nutrition Coaching, we don’t encourage extreme dieting or quick-fix plans that lead to burnout and unhealthy eating behaviors. Instead, our specialists focus on giving each client a sustainable plan for long-term success. During your sessions, you’ll learn how your body interacts with food and how to build a nutrition plan that matches your goals. With this knowledge, you can change your eating habits for the better and have the tools you need for lifelong success.

Your Personal Nutritionist in Houston is Just a Click Away

While Houston has options for in-person nutrition counseling, this traditional setup isn’t always convenient. With Top Nutrition Coaching, you can attend virtual sessions with a world-class licensed nutritionist from the comfort of home.

Qualifications

An image of an arrow icon
Not every “nutritionist” has the same education or experience, mainly because there isn’t any legal regulation of the term. Even among registered dietitians (RDs) who must pass an exam and meet minimum requirements for education and supervised work experience, there is a broad range of expertise and experience. At Top Nutrition Coaching, we only hire nutritionists with excellent credentials and proof that their clients make sustainable progress. Less than 3% of applicants have been invited to join our team to date. All of our experts are RDs, and many of them have additional qualifications, such as advanced degrees or certifications in sports dietetics or personal training.

Experience

An image of an arrow icon
You can feel confident that the suggestions you’re getting from Top Nutrition Coaching are realistic and effective. Each one of our expert nutritionists has a wealth of hands-on experience. Many of our team members have provided sports nutrition services to professional athletes. We choose nutritionists who are passionate about guiding their clients to success. Our experts have helped countless people overcome serious challenges, including eating disorders and chronic diseases. We’ll match you with a wellness expert who has the perfect experience for your specific needs and goals.

Reputation

An image of an arrow icon
Working with a nutritionist means entrusting your health to someone else, so it’s a big decision. When you hire a sports nutritionist, you’re also relying on them to help you make progress in your training and athletic endeavors. With Top Nutrition Coaching, you don’t have to wonder whether your specialist is promoting specific diets or trying to sell you questionable supplements. Every licensed dietitian in our network is a trusted, well-respected professional at the top of their field. We choose nutritionists who have all the credentials required by their state and can show that their methods are safe and effective. Your sports nutritionist is someone who truly cares about your health and your progress.

Availability

An image of an arrow icon
With many Americans struggling with chronic illness, health concerns, and obesity, nutritionists are in high demand. Even if you live in a big city like Houston, you may have to wait months to get an appointment. Our online service makes it easier to find a nutritionist with immediate availability. Once you complete our nutrition assessment and consultation, we’ll match you with a sports nutritionist who has the expertise to help you with your goals and who is available to start working with you immediately. You can schedule your virtual sessions whenever it works for you.

About Houston Registered Dietitians

Texas state law requires registered dietitians to obtain a license to practice in Houston and throughout the state. Dietitians already registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) automatically meet the state’s education and experience requirements.

Education and Experience

Candidates who aren’t registered with the CDR must complete an internship in dietetics or a professional experience program of at least 900 hours under the supervision of a registered dietitian.

Licensure

To apply for a dietitian license in Texas, candidates must pass the Texas Jurisprudence Examination and the Licensed Dietitian Examination given by the CDR.

Get Over the Houston Hurdles and Get Back to Health

There are many benefits to living in Houston, but some aspects of the city make it hard to maintain a healthy diet, especially if you’re trying to choose foods that will improve your athletic performance. With Top Nutrition Coaching, you’ll get personalized advice from a sports nutrition expert who can help you optimize your diet to reach your goals.

Minimal access to fresh food

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service, many areas of Houston qualify as food deserts, where residents don’t have easy access to fresh food. Without reliable access to healthy ingredients, many Houstonians rely on pre-packaged convenience foods that lack necessary nutrients. For people with stressful jobs and family obligations, relying on quick and easy processed foods is an understandable choice, but one that isn’t beneficial to staying healthy and fit.

Portion control challenges

Houston is home to countless excellent restaurants, many of which offer Texas-sized portions of everything on the menu. These oversized portions contribute to obesity and many other common health issues. When extra-large portions of food constantly surround you, it can be hard to understand what a healthy portion is, even when cooking and eating at home.

Full Transparency Pros and Cons

Working with an online nutritionist isn’t the only way to build healthy habits and improve your overall health. Other options, such as meal plans and diet companies, have advantages and disadvantages. Compare all the pros and cons of each option to decide which one is right for you.

Diet Companies

Pros

  • Different types of weight loss plans (e.g., prepared meals, meal-replacement items, calorie-counting plans, in-person or virtual support meetings) at various price points.
  • Most companies offer a satisfaction guarantee, so if you follow the program and don’t lose weight, you may get some portion of your money back.

Cons

  • Most diet companies focus on weight management through caloric deficit, which isn’t the best choice if you are trying to gain muscle or improve your sports performance.
  • Diet plans are often highly restrictive, and many people find it unsustainable to permanently cut out certain foods or food groups. This often leads them to revert to their original eating habits after quitting the diet.

In-Person Sports Nutrition Counseling

Pros

  • Working with a nutritionist in person can be a positive experience, and having in-person sessions often provides the accountability that many people need for long-term success.
  • It may be easier to verify a local nutrition specialist’s education, credentials, and licenses than with someone you are meeting with over the internet.

Cons

  • In-person counseling limits you to the nutritionists who live in your local area. An online platform gives you access to some of the country’s leading nutrition experts from the comfort of your own home.
  • The logistics of attending in-person appointments can be challenging, especially if you have to travel a significant distance to meet with your nutritionist.
  • Traditional in-person nutrition counseling with a credentialed expert can be more costly than online sessions.

Open Marketplaces

Pros

  • An open marketplace for nutritionists makes it easy to research and connect with many different specialists, so you can find someone who fits your individual needs and budget.
  • Most open marketplaces allow clients to rate the professionals on the site, so you can easily see which nutritionists are well-liked and have a history of helping people succeed.

Cons

  • There isn’t as much regulation in an open market as with a closed-network service (like Top Nutrition Coaching), so you don’t always know what level of service or expertise you will get.
  • Going through all the profiles of nutritionists on an open marketplace can be time-consuming, and there’s no guarantee that the professional you choose will be right for you.
