About Seattle-Specific Registered Dietitians

Registered dietitians must have more credentials and hands-on experience than other nutritionists. However, states also have unique requirements to get your license. Here are the requirements to become a registered dietitian in Washington state

  1. Complete an approved education program
All Seattle-based dietitians must complete a bachelor's degree in an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) approved dietetics program. This degree must be in human nutrition, food and nutrition, dietetics, or food management.
  1. Pass the state Commission on Dietetic Research exam
Within one year of receiving your nutrition program degree, you must take the Commission on Dietetic Research (CDR) exam. This test ensures you have the skills needed to become a state-certified registered dietitian.
  1. Apply to become a Washington state registered dietician
Once you pass your CDR exam, you must apply to become a registered dietitian in Washington. This application includes a passing CDR test score, HIV/AIDS training, and some paperwork.
  1. Maintain your certification over your career
To continue practicing in Washington, you must complete 75 approved continuing education credits every five years. All Washington dietitian professionals also must submit renewal applications to keep their Washington certification and CDR registration.

Get Over the Seattle Hurdles and Get Back to Health

Choosing to prioritize your health can be difficult, no matter where you live. For Seattlites, overcoming busy schedules, food deserts, and transportation can be hurdles to health.

Busy work schedules

Seattle, Washington, is a hub for many large technology companies and businesses. With a high median household income of nearly $25,000 more than the nation’s average comes long work hours at a desk. These demanding schedules make it difficult to squeeze in time for healthy meal prep, grocery shopping, personal nutrition counseling, or exercise. Instead, skipping meals or healthy cooking in favor of productivity can quickly become a habit.

A Seattle nutritionist can help you navigate these challenges. For example, they can help identify areas in your routine where you can add short walks or help you find ways to make healthy eating easy.

Transportation challenges

Though Seattle is not known for its traffic, that’s not to say it isn’t bad. For people living in this Washington city, the average commute time is 28 minutes. Whether or not you’re driving to work daily, you may need to hop in the car to run errands, attend appointments, or even stop at the gym. Regardless, getting around Seattle can be time-consuming. This challenge makes it harder to attend nutrition workshops or exercise classes regularly.

For some people, shopping at a healthy grocery store may require additional travel since the number of grocery stores and food access is distributed unevenly throughout the Seattle area. South Seattle and southern parts of Washington’s King County are “food deserts,” meaning that these areas are more than one mile away from a grocery store or farmers' markets. Since food deserts most often correlate with impoverished neighborhoods, travel expenses make grocery shopping for healthy staples a significant challenge in Seattle.

Full Transparency Pros and Cons

There is a lot to consider when deciding if a virtual nutritionist is the right choice for you. Since everyone has different needs, there is no one right answer! Here is a closer look at some of the pros and cons that come with virtual nutrition counseling versus other wellness alternatives.

In-Person Seattle Nutritionists

Pros

  • Some people prefer face-to-face counseling sessions so that they feel better connected to their nutritionist.
  • If you live in Seattle, traveling to and from your nutritionist’s office may be easy if you find a provider who is in close proximity to your work or home.
  • Going to a nutritionist’s office may provide you with an escape from the stress and demands of home or work.

Cons

  • In-person nutrition visits require traveling to and from appointments. This can add an extra layer of stress to people with busy schedules, long commutes, or family demands.
  • Looking for a nutritionist in Seattle limits your search. If you have specific health concerns or specific qualifications you want to find in a nutrition expert, in-person nutrition counseling limits you to working with dietitians in the Seattle area.

Diet Companies

Pros

  • Sign up for diet plans on your own schedule. Since most diet plans are self-guided, you skip the hassle of scheduling appointments.
  • Oftentimes, diet companies offer a diet plan that comes at a one-time cost. This makes diet companies good for people who are concerned about budget or want a cheap, quick-fix.
  • Some diet companies offer apps for progress tracking, finding information to FAQs, and to connect with other users.

Cons

  • Diet plans often fail, especially in the long-run! Many diet companies offer a one-size-fits-all approach to health that does not account for a person’s unique dietary needs, medical conditions, and health goals.
  • Diet companies may not be backed by scientific findings. Though their marketing messages may claim evidence-based techniques, it is important to do your own research to determine whether the diet plan is supported by health science.

Online Nutrition Counseling

Pros

  • Working with an online nutritionist is the most efficient way to get accurate and personalized health advice. Patients no longer need to account for driving to and from appointments or scheduling conflicts when it comes to starting their nutrition journey.
  • You have access to nutrition experts from around the world. This makes it easier to find a professional whose skillset, expertise, and credentials match your needs.

Cons

  • If you know that in-person counseling works best for you, online nutrition counseling does not provide the face-to-face interaction you may be looking for.
  • Many patients take online counseling calls from home. However, if you have a busy or stressful environment, it may be difficult to find a place where you feel comfortable taking the video session.
