Electrolyte drinks are a hot topic right now, and I’m not surprised since it’s certainly an important aspect of overall health. As a dietitian, I’m constantly telling my clients to keep up with their fluid intake. There’s more to hydration than just water, electrolytes play a big role in our body’s ability to maintain the appropriate fluid balance.
The good news is that electrolyte powders have made it easier to get the right electrolytes every day. But not all electrolyte supplements are created equal. Some have too much sodium, some have too much sugar, and others lack the right electrolyte balance.
In this article, I’ll review the 7 best electrolyte powders to help you find the one that meets your individual needs and goals.

Overall rankings reflect a combination of all four factors, weighted toward formulation and value for everyday hydration use.
Electrolytes are minerals that have a positive or negative charge when dissolved in water. We need to consume a certain amount everyday to help with muscle contractions, cellular and whole body hydration, maintaining appropriate pH levels in the body, sending signals between cells, and assisting in moving waste out of our cells.
Did You Know? Water is an essential nutrient, 20% of which in our diet comes from high water-content foods in our diet, such as fruits and vegetables. If you’re not eating enough of these foods, you may need to up your total water intake.
Every electrolyte supplement has a unique formulation; some may meet your individual needs while others miss the mark. I’ve compiled a list of the top 7 electrolyte drinks, including their pros and cons, purported benefits, taste, and mixability to help guide your choice.

Vital Minerals is one of my favorite electrolyte powders. With a balanced ratio of sodium to potassium, vitamin C to support healthy immune function, and a base of hydrating coconut water - without added sugar or artificial sweeteners - it has everything I look for in an electrolyte drink.
Nutrition Facts
Live it Up Vital Minerals comes in five flavors, Lemon Lime, Pomegranate Mango, Strawberry Lemonade, Pineapple Coconut, and Watermelon, all of which have just the right amount of sweetness that shines through with the help of the natural sweetener stevia and a touch of naturally occurring sugar from the coconut water powder base. It's also not too salty tasting.
Mixability is pretty good as well. After adding water and a scoop of Vital Minerals to my bottle and giving it a good shake, I did notice a few flecks that still needed to be dissolved, but they disappeared fairly quickly after that. I like that it doesn’t settle, so I didn’t need to keep shaking it up.
I rated Vital Minerals a 4.7 out of 5. A balanced sodium-to-potassium ratio, coconut water base, no added sugar, and vitamin C make it the most complete daily hydration formula I’ve tested. If you’re looking for an all around high quality, straight-forward, electrolyte powder for every day use without added sugars, fillers, or artificial sweeteners, but that still tastes great with a lot of flavor options, Live it Up Vital Minerals is an excellent choice.

Instant Hydration has one of the highest potassium contents of electrolyte powders on the market. It uses French Sel Gris (grey sea salt) as its sodium source and does a good job keeping its ingredients clean.
Nutrition Facts
Instant Hydration’s website lists eight benefits, but here we’ll focus on just three.
Instant Hydration uses stevia leaf extract and monk fruit extract for its subtle sweetness. I like how it’s not too sweet, but unfortunately it’s also not quite sweet enough to balance out the saltiness. Their twelve flavors include some fun ones, such as cotton candy, paloma, lychee, and passionfruit orange guava (POG).
I’m impressed with Instant Hydration’s ability to mix quickly and smoothly.
I rated Instant Hydration a 4.5 out of 5. The product brings a big dose of potassium, but keeps sodium at a moderate level for daily use. Many people enjoy their flavors and the addition of mineral-packed Sel Gris.
Of note: People with certain health conditions or on specific medications may need to watch their potassium intake. Always talk to your doctor before starting a new supplement.

With a company history dating back to 2004, Nuun has had plenty of time to refine their product. While it does have a small amount of added sugar, it does a great job with its balance of electrolytes.
Nutrition Facts
Nuun Sport has several flavors, all sweetened with a mix of dextrose and stevia leaf extract. While the tablet does take a bit longer to dissolve (almost a full 5 minutes after I dropped it in), the flavor and saltiness are mild with a hint of citrus.
I awarded Nuun Sport an overall score of 4.2 out of 5. Nuun Sport Hydration Tablets work well for daily hydration and come in a portable, neat container. While it may not be ideal for heavy workouts or high heat, it’s a good option to keep on hand for an electrolyte lift when needed.

LMNT has dug its pro-sodium stance hard, with a ‘more is better’ position and a product with 1,000 mg of sodium per serving. While the majority of research and organizations are not aligned with this view, LMNT is a great product for high-intensity athletes or people working in high heat environments looking for a high-quality electrolyte powder.
Nutrition Facts
I was very surprised how much I actually enjoyed LMNT. I thought it would be too salty, but they do a great job balancing out the extreme sodium levels with tart and sweet (stevia leaf extract). It takes a little longer to mix, but once mixed it stays mostly dissolved.
I awarded LMNT an overall score of 4.0 out of 5. While I wouldn’t recommend LMNT as a daily hydration supplement, I do think it’s a tasty, high-quality option for athletes and those working in hot, humid climates.

Liquid I.V. is an Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), which means it contains a specific amount of sugar in addition to electrolytes for optimal fluid absorption. This type of hydration solution is excellent for during exercise or to help provide immune support.
Nutrition Facts
Liquid I.V. is quite sweet, which makes sense as it uses three sources of sweetness: cane sugar, dextrose, and stevia leaf extract. The powder mixes relatively well, though it does require a few extra shakes while you drink to help keep the powder suspended.
I awarded Liquid I.V. an overall score of 3.5 out of 5. Because of the carbohydrate content, Liquid I.V. is a great electrolyte powder for athletes and those looking for immune support. For daily hydration, it’s important to weigh whether the added sugar is right for your individual needs.

Ultima Replenisher not only has the biggest variety of electrolytes in its formula, but it’s also an excellent choice if you’re watching your sodium intake.
Nutrition Facts
With such low sodium, Ultima Replenisher is lightly sweet, using organic stevia leaf extract to enhance the flavor. It mixes fairly with only small clumps and only minimal mixing is needed to help keep the drink from separating while drinking.
I awarded Ultima Replenisher an overall score of 3.3 out of 5. If you’re looking for an electrolyte drink with a very light sodium level, Ultima Replenisher is a good choice. If, on the other hand, you are sweating a lot from intense workouts or high heat, you may want to choose a product with a more balanced ratio of sodium to potassium.

DripDrop is well-known for its work as an Oral Rehydration Solution and has been used worldwide in disaster relief efforts to address severe dehydration.
Nutrition Facts
DripDrop comes in many flavors, helping to satisfy the desire for variety. With that said, some people are a bit put-off because each packet is meant to be mixed into just 8 ounces, while other electrolyte powders can be mixed into twice as much. Overall, the drink is light, sweet, and not too salty, but - for me - has an aftertaste that I find distinctly linked with artificial sweeteners.
I awarded DripDrop an overall score of 3 out of 5. DripDrop is an Oral Rehydration Solution that is an optimal choice for those with an active lifestyle in the heat or those who need to rehydrate quickly The added sugars may be helpful for athletes, though since most Americans get enough added sugars through their diet, those looking for daily hydration may prefer to look elsewhere for their electrolyte needs.
Let’s dig a little deeper into the purported benefits of electrolyte powders.
Did You Know: Salt is a mineral composed of sodium and chloride. So if an electrolyte powder contains ‘salt’ of any kind, it contains chloride as well, even if chloride is not indicated on the label.
The electrolyte powder you choose should reflect your individual needs, personal health goals, and taste. Here are a few factors to consider.
Electrolyte powders are a delicious and convenient way to help get the micronutrients needed to boost wellness and cellular hydration. While getting these nutrients from a balanced diet is always the goal, it’s not always possible.
If your goal is daily hydration, look for a product with around 500 mg of sodium or less, a clean ingredient list, and a taste that makes you look forward to every sip.
If your goal is to replenish electrolytes in high-heat or high-intensity exercise situations, a product with more sodium, and even a little added sugar, may be better at meeting your needs.
From my perspective as a dietitian, my overall choice is Live it Up Vital Minerals. With a balanced sodium to potassium ratio, a moderate amount of sodium, a straightforward ingredient list, and a light, refreshing taste. Plus, it’s based in coconut water, which is a hydrating drink all on its own.
Remember that everyone's health is individual, so be sure to choose a product that fits your unique needs and goals.
Here is a bit more information before your dive into choosing an electrolyte drink.
Because everyone’s goals and health are different, it’s difficult to crown one electrolyte drink the ‘healthiest’. However, certain characteristics may be considered a more balanced option:
If you’re a long-distance athlete, electrolyte drinks may not be enough to suit your needs. Carbohydrates are critical for endurance training, so you may consider a sports drink with a combination of carbohydrates, sodium, and potassium.
Electrolytes are essential minerals necessary for fluid balance, muscle function, sending signals between cells, and many other bodily functions. While we get most of our electrolytes from the diet, taking an electrolyte powder is an easy way to get these critical micronutrients, especially if you are exercising or working in a high-heat environment.
Every electrolyte functions differently. For hydration, sodium, potassium, and chloride work in tandem to help balance whole-body and intracellular hydration. For muscle contractions, magnesium and calcium are critical. Calcium and phosphorus work not only as electrolytes, but also are key to bone mineralization.
Most people get too much sodium from their diet, which has been linked to ill health for some people. This is why most health professionals recommend an electrolyte drink that is not overabundant in sodium. Additionally, getting too many electrolytes may have the opposite effect than what you’re looking for, including fatigue.
For this reason, choose an electrolyte supplement with moderate sodium, balanced electrolytes, and stick to the serving recommendations (or less if warranted). If your diet is already high in sodium, or if your doctor has told you to be cautious of sodium, consider an electrolyte powder lowest in this mineral.
If you're sensitive to caffeine, note that some electrolyte supplements contain this compound. Read ingredient lists carefully.
Electrolyte imbalances may cause fatigue, muscle cramps or twitching, and even dizziness. You may also experience low electrolytes if you’ve been ill with vomiting or diarrhea, have been sweating excessively, or are taking certain medications.
Be sure to get plenty of fluids if you are also adding in electrolytes, as hydration and electrolytes go hand in hand.
Please reach out to your healthcare provider if you think you are experiencing any worrisome symptoms.
We lose electrolytes, particularly sodium, and to some extent potassium, through sweat and urine. The longer you train and sweat, the more electrolytes you may need.
If you’re a long-distance athlete, electrolyte drinks may not be enough to suit your needs. Carbohydrates are critical for endurance training, so you may consider a sports drink that combines carbohydrates, sodium, and potassium, such as Gatorade, or gels that provide this mix of macro- and micronutrients.
With intense exercise and prologued duration in the heat, sports drinks may not be enough. Some athletes also need electrolyte packets mixed into their sports nutrition routine.
