Personally tailored nutritional advice.

An image of an arrow icon
Everyone is different. When trying to develop healthy eating habits on your own, conducting numerous Google searches may not provide results that apply to you or your condition. A certified nutritionist can help you learn how to take care of yourself by giving advice specifically tailored to you and your situation. This straightforward advice can help you achieve your goals more efficiently.

Help manage chronic diseases.

About Miami-Specific Registered Dietitians

We regularly ensure that all our nutritionists are up to date with their certifications and licensure, including their status as registered dietitians in Miami.

Becoming a Registered Dietitian in Florida

To become a registered dietitian in Miami, the Florida Board of Dietetics and Nutrition mandates that only those who earn the credential of Registered Dietitian can be licensed as a dietitian in the state. Earning this credential begins with completing registered dietitian education in Florida. The Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) 's Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics must accredit your chosen program. From there, you must apply for a Florida Dietetic Internship and pass the state CDR exam.

Continuing Professional Education

Once you complete the requirements to become a Registered Dietitian in Florida, you must apply for licensing. To maintain your Florida dietician license, your dietician license must be renewed every odd year on May 31. You must complete 30 hours of continuing education (CE) during each license renewal period. For first-time license renewal, you must complete 25 general CE hours (including the ten live hours), two medical error hours, and 3 hours on HIV/AIDS.

Get Over the Miami Hurdles and Get Back to Health

In many ways, Miami is a great place to live. In terms of health and wellness, it has some excellent parks and recreation areas for getting exercise, health-conscious eateries, and a variety of new food sources. However, it's undeniable that Miami has a health issue. According to a report on Florida's community needs from 2019-2021, heart disease is the leading cause of death in Miami, followed by strokes at number 3 and diabetes at number 7.

Lack of access to healthcare

Though the city of Miami has adequate healthcare infrastructure and resources, vulnerable communities still experience barriers to accessing care. This lack of resources can make it difficult for people to travel to a doctor or nutritionist's office to receive a consultation.

Lack of chronic disease management

Chronic diseases can often be controlled but rarely cured. They include conditions such as heart disease and stroke, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer's, back problems, asthma, obesity, allergy, and chronic depression. Chronic diseases are the leading cause of death and health challenges worldwide. In 2014, the leading cause of death in University of Miami Hospitals and Clinic’s (UMH) top five primary service areas was heart disease, followed by malignant neoplasms, chronic lower respiratory diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, and diabetes.

Registered dieticians and nutritionists are typically trained to help those with chronic illnesses manage their disease, but Miami lacks relaying those opportunities to residents.

Full Transparency Pros and Cons

The decisions you make about your eating habits can significantly impact your ability to participate or compete in the activities you love. We want you to feel good about your approach to nutrition, even if working with a nutritionist isn't the right choice for you. Here are a few other options that you might want to consider.

In-Person Nutritionists

Pros:

  • Seeing a nutritionist in person can help people stay more motivated and focused on completing goals between sessions. Additionally, traveling to each session can make the process feel more natural and give clients more motivation in their journey.
  • Some people may prefer working with an in-person nutritionist if they are worried about specific issues and want to meet face-to-face in case an examination or diagnostic testing is needed.

Cons:

  • In-person appointments limit you to nutritionists who work in Miami instead of having virtual access to leading nutritionists and dieticians who have expertise in the specific sports and activities that matter to you.
  • Miami is a major city with heavy traffic, making getting to appointments on the other side of town difficult, particularly when you have to fit them around your work schedule. It's certainly less convenient than attending sessions from the comfort of your own home.
  • Although Miami is home to some excellent sports nutrition professionals, they are in high demand, so you may not be able to get an appointment with one of the city's best sports nutritionists. Top Nutrition Coaching pairs you with an expert who practices online so that you can schedule your initial consultation immediately.

Online Meal Plans

Pros:

  • If you already know which nutrients your body needs for peak performance, specific meal plans may be able to provide that while saving you time on meal planning, preparation, and cooking.
  • Some online meal plans cater to various dietary preferences, such as vegetarians and vegans, gluten-free diets, high protein diets, etc.

Cons:

  • Depending on their career and medical conditions, some people have precise sports nutrition needs. A generic eating plan cannot provide the specific proportions of nutrients that you may need.
  • Online meal plans may have limited nutritional value, as they are often marketed to people trying to lose weight. A meal plan isn't the same as a personalized nutrition plan that considers your training schedule and the type and intensity of your workouts.
  • Online meal plans can be costly, especially compared to buying ingredients at the supermark

Diet Companies

Pros:

  • Some diet companies are relatively inexpensive to work with, as long as you are happy to follow a standardized eating plan and have little to no live communication with nutritionists.
  • Many diet companies have apps that allow you to track your progress, find more information, and connect with other users.

Cons:

  • There's a big difference between getting fit and strong and losing weight. Some dieting companies' nutrition and health promotions are aimed at people who want to see a lower number on the bathroom scale instead of those trying to manage illnesses or train.
  • Some diet companies may have a radical approach to nutrition, such as restricting calories or eliminating certain foods. For highly active individuals who need plenty of calories to fuel their workouts, those special diets won't provide enough nutrition to allow you to exercise safely.
  • Diet companies usually offer a "one size fits all" diet plan that doesn't consider an individual's health profile, such as food sensitivities or high blood pressure. They certainly aren't aimed at people with specific goals.
